PortoTango has been taught by the same hands since 2009. Our teachers are working dancers, festival alumni, and bilingual guides — chosen for what they know, and for how generously they pass it on.
Every member of our teaching team trained, in one form or another, with Marco Salgueiro — dancer-choreographer, co-founder of PortoTango, and one of only a handful of European teachers to attend the Buenos Aires International Tango Festival for nine consecutive years, working directly with the maestros of the old guard.
That lineage is not a credential we hang on a wall. It is the standard our six resident instructors hold themselves to on the floor every Thursday, and it is why visiting masters from Argentina, Italy and Uruguay keep returning to Porto to teach beside us.
Meet the resident team
All classes are taught in Portuguese, English or Spanish — choose the language that lets you listen more deeply. Below, the six artists who hold the weekly calendar.
Co-founder of PortoTango and the house pianist at every weekly milonga since 2009. Inês accompanies all beginner and intermediate classes and curates the musical identity of the school — D'Arienzo to Pugliese to the contemporary orchestras she introduces each season.
Tomás leads our Absolute Beginners and Foundations of Salón courses. Trained by Marco for seven years, he has a particular gift for teaching the embrace — that first, quiet conversation between two chests — without rushing it.
Catarina teaches our Intermediate Salón and the beloved Vals Workshop each spring. A graduate of the Porto Tango Company ensemble, she brings the lyrical weight of vals into every walk — slow, patient, and musical.
Eduardo holds the Monday Milonga and the Nuevo Lab for advanced dancers. Trained in Buenos Aires under several generations of milongueros, he keeps our Tuesday social nights running with quiet authority and a wicked sense of timing.
Joana leads the Advanced Salón track and directs the Porto Tango Company ensemble. A seasoned festival performer with credits in Buenos Aires, Montevideo and Istanbul, she is the teacher students graduate into.
Helena launched Porto's first fully wheelchair-friendly weekly class in 2021 and now leads our Accessible Tango and Seniors' Salon programmes. She teaches the way she dances — unhurried, attentive, and unfailingly kind.
Each spring and each autumn we host two visiting masters from the international circuit for a long weekend of workshops — open to our students and to visiting dancers. Past guests have included artists from Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Milan and Istanbul.
For three days only: Carla and Roberto Di Prieto, the Buenos Aires couple celebrated for their architectural salón and their devotion to the old-guard orchestras. Workshops in Salón Architecture, Dancing to D'Arienzo, and a Sunday-evening Milonga de Primavera open to the public.

Join the waiting listTango is not choreography. It is the way two people learn to listen at the same time — and then, eventually, to disagree gracefully. Everything I teach in a class, I first learned from a partner who refused to let me cheat the rhythm. That is the only authority a teacher should claim.
Free for first-time visitors. No partner required. Arrive ten minutes early, wear shoes you can pivot in, and we'll introduce you to the instructor whose card you just read.
