Visiting Porto

Step inside Porto’s tango home — tonight, this week, or for your private evening.

A restored 19th-century riverside warehouse on Rua do Ouro has held a milonga every week since 2009. Whether you have one evening in the city or you’re planning a celebration, here are the three doors that open onto the floor.

The 90-minute Tourist Drop-in

Inside the drop-in — what happens from the moment you walk in.

You arrive on Rua do Ouro at 18:25. Marco or one of our resident instructors greets you at the door of the riverside warehouse, takes your coat, and introduces you to your group — usually four to ten visitors, often solo travellers, occasionally a couple on holiday who’d like to do something memorable together.

For the first twenty minutes you learn the walk — the foundations of the embrace, posture, and the connection that makes tango possible. The next forty minutes are spent on a short sequence you can actually dance by the end of the class: a few steps, a pause, an ochro, a quiet walk back to the line of dance. The final thirty minutes are yours on the floor, with the instructors circulating, while the evening’s milonga begins to assemble around you.

You leave at 20:00 with the port glass still warm in your hand and, if you wish, a seat waiting at the milonga that follows.

14 years of weekly milongas, every Friday & Saturday since 2009
85 dancers on average each weekend — Porto’s largest regular tango night north of Lisbon
3 languages of instruction — Portuguese, English & Spanish, with visiting masters from Argentina, Italy and Uruguay each quarter
2021 first Porto tango school to offer fully wheelchair-accessible weekly classes

“We had one evening in Porto before flying home and almost cancelled dinner to come back. The drop-in felt like being handed a key to the city. Two instructors, six of us around the floor, a glass of port — and then we stayed for the milonga until closing.”

Our weekly milongas

Porto’s largest regular tango social night north of Lisbon.

A milonga is a social dance evening — not a class, not a performance. Dancers arrive, the floor fills, and music plays in sets of three or four songs called tandas, separated by a short cortina. You ask someone to dance by catching their eye and a quiet nod (mirada), then walk across the floor to meet them (cabaceo). Between songs you return to your table; new tanda, new partner.
